Starting a job in Germany: what an employer may ask, and when

No law lists what may be asked while you apply. The data protection authorities and the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency, summing up the courts, say an employer may ask only what matters for the job, and as a rule nothing that touches ethnic origin, gender, religion, disability, age or sexual identity. Questions that are not allowed need not be answered, and you may answer them untruthfully. Once you are hired, the law names the tax and social insurance data the employer needs.
